Honest Design Journal

About

Honest Design Journal is for readers who want to understand the things they meet each day: a chair, a printed page, a screen or the room around them. We take design seriously without treating it as a private language. Each piece begins with close looking and asks what a design choice does, who it serves and what it leaves out.

What we look at

Our subjects include objects, graphic communication, digital interfaces, materials and shared spaces. We pay attention to shape, sequence, use and context: the details that can make a choice clear, awkward, inviting or easy to overlook.

Who we write for

You do not need a design qualification to read us. We write for curious general readers, makers and anyone who has wondered why a familiar thing feels intuitive, confusing or well considered.

A closer, calmer reading

We favour specific examples and plain language over grand verdicts. A design rarely has one answer for every person or setting, so we explain the trade-offs and keep our claims in proportion to what the subject supports.

Our point of view

Good design rewards a second look

We look past first impressions to the choices that make an object, page or place legible and useful. Design is not only how something appears; it is also how it meets a person.
